The current Guelph started as a settlement in the 1820s, began by John Galt, initially from Scotland, the principal Superintendent of the Canada Company. He based the home office, and his home, in the group. The territory – a lot of what moved toward becoming Wellington County – had already been a piece of the Halton Block, a Crown Reserve for the Six Nations Iroquois. Galt would later be considered as the organizer of Guelph.
